Montopolis is Getting a New Recreation and Community Center

//Montopolis Recreation and Community Center Ground Breaking Ceremony

Information Release from the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department — Montopolis Recreation and Community Center

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Austin Public Health, Public Works Department, and other community partners and organizations, invite the public and the media to attend the ground breaking ceremony of the new Montopolis Recreation and Community Center on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at 9:00 AM. The ground breaking ceremony will be held at the current Montopolis Recreation Center, located at 1200 Montopolis Drive.

Featured elected speakers at the ground breaking include, U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett, Mayor Steve Adler, and District 3 Council Member Sabino “Pio” Renteria. City of Austin department representatives and community and organization leaders will also be attending and be available for interviews.

At the ground breaking ceremony, the public will have an opportunity to join Art in Public Places and view a community inspired photography exhibition by Rene Renteria for the Montopolis Neighborhood. The public is invited to vote on their top 15 images, which will become an Art in Public Places installation at the recreation center when the new facility is complete.

The current facility has served the community as a center for recreation and events for over four decades. The building, while providing a space for sports and recreation, is in poor condition and can no longer meet the needs of a growing and vibrant community.

The new Montopolis Recreation and Community Center is a project that the voters of Austin approved in the Nov. 2012 Bond election. The Montopolis Recreation and Community Center will be a joint use facility between the Parks and Recreation and the Austin Public Health Department.

Some of the additions and improvements that will be in the new Montopolis Recreation and Community Center include:

  • Boxing/Fitness Room
  • Teen Space
  • Health Education
  • Multi-sport Gym
  • Kitchen
  • Youth Development Programs
  • Public Art Pieces
